“Waste Not, Want Not”: Taxidermy And Sculpting Merge In Sarina Brewer’s Art

Pop surrealism’s fusion with traditional taxidermy has blossomed into a revolutionary movement, guided by classically trained sculptor Sarina Brewer. Her unconventional mixed-media work is a combination of traditional taxidermy materials blended with gilding and sculpting techniques. These imaginative creations are a reflection of mortality, beauty, and the natural world and have widely come to be known as “Rogue Taxidermy.”

Inspired by her childhood bonds with animals, Brewer’s work at its core promotes her philosophy that “no animal should die for the sake of art”. She has stated that this belief led her to exclusively use ethically sourced animal remains throughout her career. By applying mummification, taxidermy, and sculpting techniques to found roadkill and discarded livestock, Brewer’s work is transformed into artwork that delivers a message. She describes her pieces as “reconstructions that communicate stories of reincarnation, personal history, socio-political themes, and environmental concerns, often also revealing the animal’s own story. Each sculpture is an exploration of multilayered relationships between animals and humans, including with the artist herself.”

Shanilou Perera

Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.
