This Recently Found Footage Of The Tallest Man That Ever Lived Will Make You Feel Like A Dwarf
In the year 1918, on February 22 a seemingly regular healthy boy named Robert Wadlow was born in Alton, Illinois. Little did anyone know, this little baby would grow up to be the tallest man in the world.
Wadlow started growing at an extremely fast rate soon after birth and doctors said that the increased growth was caused by a hyperactive pituitary gland. When he began to walk at 11 months, he was already 3 ft 3.5 in (1.00 m) tall and weighed 40 lbs (18.1 kg) and by age 9 weighing 180 lbs (81.6 kg), he was strong enough to carry his father (who was sitting in a living room chair) up the stairs to the second floor.
Although Wadlow was not like any other child of his age when it came to height, his parents did not want him to feel excluded. Although it was hard for Wadlow to participate in regular activities due to his height, that didn’t stop him from becoming the world’s tallest Boy Scout at the age of 13. He even had to wear a custom-made uniform and had a tent and a sleeping bag modified for his height.
In the year 1939, Wadlow passed previously known tallest person ever John Rogan, who was 8 ft 9 in (2.69 m). Sadly, such height came with its share of health problems – Wadlow had difficulty walking and needed leg braces and a cane to walk. During a professional appearance on the 4th of July, 1940, a faulty leg brace caused a blister on his ankle which eventually led to infection. It got so bad, that 11 days after the infection Wadlow passed away in his sleep. He was 22 at the time and measured 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m). Despite his intimidating height, Wadlow is still affectionately remembered as the “Gentle Giant”.
Just in case the pictures in the gallery below are not enough to satisfy your curiosity, some amazing filmed footage of Wadlow has emerged recently. Check it out below!
