This Nigerian Artist Makes Colorful Portraits Of People By Recycling Old Flip-Flops (10 Pics)

Konboye Ebipade Eugene is an artist, environmentalist, and mosaicist who has been creating flip-flop portraits since 2017. The artist goes through heaps of waste dumped in Nigeria by several industrialized countries and finds countless flip-flops to recycle and create his artworks.

“Recycling was inspired by shortage of conventional art materials in the region where I schooled”, the artist tells DeMilked “My creative process starts with scavenging and sourcing for discarded flipflops, cleaning and disinfecting before assembling and stitching to hold them dem together after which I polish.” Cutting the flip-flops in pieces, he transforms them into colorful portraits that not only radiate beauty but also send a strong message of “reducing plastic waste”.
