This Artist Reimagined 10 Cartoon Characters As Black And Triggered Some People On The Internet
With many artists reimagining Disney princesses in various situations, illustrator and cartoonist Tyron Handy creates something different. He reimagines famous cartoon characters as black people, but people on the internet are quite conflicted on his art.
In an interview with Buzzfeed, the artist said he’s not just putting designer clothes and jewelry onto the characters: “My recreations really look like they could be parallel versions of the characters.” Although the illustrations are just his side project – his main project is a weekly comic about a character named Ty, called ‘ Apple Dapple Tactics ‘.
Tyron says there weren’t a lot of cartoons that represented him when he was growing up – “most black characters in cartoons and tv shows were stereotypical side characters and the best friend of the white main character.” He thinks that more black kids need to see themselves represented in the media. Sadly, people on the internet were seeing his illustrations differently – they started calling them racist and accused the artist of stealing characters.
