Someone Is Showing That All Instagram Photos Are Starting To Look The Same And It’s Pretty Freaky

You know how people are always taking pictures near the leaning tower of Pisa, pretending to hold it? Or the classic “sun in palm” photos? While these may be considered “classic” cliches, with the constantly rising social media use, a lot of new ones have emerged. And one Instagram account called Insta Repeat is dedicated to pointing them out.

A 27-year-old anonymous Alaskan artist and filmmaker that is behind this account aims to critique originality in media creation. Alaska has many places that attract these “Instagram photographers” and the artist noticed some repeating trends in the pictures taken there and even says she has been guilty of it herself. “Artists and creators fall into patterns. But I think that what is happening on Instagram is more extreme,” told the artist in an interview with Bored Panda.

It’s quite funny, that most of these photographers aim to inspire others to be unique and explore nature while falling under the same cliches themselves. The artist seems to enjoy this ironic fact too: “I chose the outdoorsy type to focus on because I see it a lot because of where I live but more importantly because I think think the “genre” celebrates a “free” and “authentic” lifestyle that is antithetical to the sameness of all the photos.”

The artist says that the most amazing thing that happened since starting the account is that people began to engage in a critical debate on originality and creation of media. “There are some really in-depth discussions going on in the comment threads,” says the artist.
