Photographer Imagines Her Life With Dozens Of Different Men In ‘Self-Portraits With Men’

People love “what if’s” because it’s always interesting to know how things might have turned different – probably for the better! Czech photographer Dita Pepe explores this in her 15 year-long project “Self-Portraits With Men”. The name is a deceptively simple description. Throughout the project Dita posed as the wife or life partner of dozens of different men of all walks on life. Sometimes, she even brought her daughter. Dita emulated aesthetic surrounding the men in an effort to imagine what life with them would look like. Rather than stating that the wife is always molded by her man, this project explores how our appearance is influenced by relationships and circumstances, socio-economical or otherwise.

The project reflects Dita’s photography career in general. Born in the now-defunct Czechoslovakia, she left for Germany with her first husband. There, she became interested in photography as a form of self discovery. Returning to her home country with her second husband, she spent time photographing people around the asylum where he worked. Dita started the “Self-Portraits” project, posing in photographs with various women as their doppelganger. She received her master’s degree for “Self-Portraits with Men”, a project that is still ongoing, but has already been featured Kodak Visual Gallery, Koln and other places.

Interesting to see such a subversive idea succeed.
