Hypnotizing Translucent Waves In 19th Century Russian Paintings

The sea holds fascination with us, what with it’s beauty and fury. Some people say “I’ll sail that in a wooden boat”, and Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was really passionate about painting their plight. A 19th century painter, he made amazing artwork of ships at sea. The waves are the most impressive part, light and translucent, thrashing the great vessels about.

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky was a Russian-Armenian painter. The prolific artist created more that 6000 paintings, half of which dealt with ships and the sea. This is not surprising, considering that he was a native of Crimea, born in the port town of Feodosia. During his life, he became famous in Russia and abroad, being the first non-French person to receive the Legion of Honor.
