Frozen Lake Michigan Shatters And Creates Millions Of Surreal Shapes
The polar vortex might have long passed but people still remember the havoc this weather phenomenon created. However, along with all the troubles, the vortex created some beautiful unintentional works of art all of us can enjoy.
The extreme temperature drop has kept Lake Michigan frozen for the great part of the winter too – and now that spring is finally here and the temperature is starting to rise, the ice is finally melting and shattering, creating a mesmerizing sight that looks almost like a surreal work of art.

As the water is moving underneath the ice, it pushes the ice sheets to the surface, creating unique patterns. You might be tempted to go and capture some beautiful photos but US Coast Guards warned people to keep their distance. “No ice is safe ice especially this time of year,” said US Coast Guard BMC Grant Heffner in an interview with MLive . “The ice is certainly deteriorating and breaking up.”

This is not the first case of Lake Michigan freezing over and photographers have been taking pictures of the frozen lake for years.

Lake Michigan is the only one of the Great Lakes that is located entirely in the United States and occupies the surface area of 22,404 sq mi (58,030 km 2 ), making it the third largest after Lake Huron and Lake Superior.
