Domestic Bliss: A Mother’s Darkly Humorous Family Portraits
Susan Copich is a commercial actress, dancer, photographer, and mother of two who created a satirical photo series called “Domestic Bliss” that highlights the not-so-shiny side of family life.
Things were going pretty swell for Copich, as she was living with her husband and two daughters in Manhattan and was leading a successful career as a performer. That was until her agent‘s calls stopped and she was immersed into her family life full speed. That was when she realized that her daughters had grown up and she had been absent from almost all of the family’s photos – because she had been the one taking them.
This inspired her to take on a photo series that would not only put her in front of the camera along with the rest of the family, but also reveal her darker thoughts on what being a wife and a mother can sometimes mean.
“ If you’ve met me, I have a very seemingly sunny disposition, but I have a whole interior world where at different times I’ve felt depression and angst, ” she told Slate. “ For many years, I put it in a little ball, and I decided to just explore it this time. It’s been so fun to bring those feelings out and give them light. ”
