Amazing Life-Like Wooden Sculptures Hand Carved By Peter Demetz

Carving a sculpture is definitely an arduous task – after all, there are no easy ways to correct your mistakes. This doesn’t stop Italian-born Peter Demetz from making expertly carved wooden sculptures of people. They are small, but surprisingly detailed. All the creases of clothing, all the curves of body and even loose strands of hair – nothing escapes his carving blade. The end result is of stunning craftsmanship, and very much life-like. Real people turned into wood.

The subject matter is quite interesting, too. The sculptures rarely ever face the viewer – their backs are turned, and their sight is either fixed on something far away, or on the ground. In effect, they look somewhat sad, standing still like that, but it also gives off a sort of photographic feeling. Like a photographer went and took pictures of people going about with their lives, and the backgrounds came out unfocused.

Eerie, it’s what I’m saying.

Hypnotizing Wilderness Landscape Carved Out Of Wood

After almost 2 years of on-and-off preparation and work, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based artist duo Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth are almost finished with their new woodcut print, called “Overlook.” The meticulously intricate woodcut of a speckled landscape with forests, mountains and lakes will be soon available as a three-color print, the final size reaching 28” x 46”.

“ Layer upon layer of undulating pattern builds a dizzying intensity in ‘Overlook’, ” write the artists. “ A panoramic infinity will be suggested by the print’s ability to eventually meet itself seemlessly at the edges, expanding like an eternal ‘wallpaper’ into an ever stretching vista! ”

The “Overlook” print will be available as a single piece, a diptych, a triptych, or “ an entire room’s worth of loping, abundant wilderness as far as the eye can see! ” – all from their Tugboat print shop.
