A Table That Just Floats Mid Air On Its Own Balloon Collection
You know what is, like, so last year? Tables held up by actual table legs! They’re so boring! That’s why Duffy London (and Christopher Duffy in particular) has designed the UP Balloon Coffee Table. The Round Edition 2015 is held aloft by a number of balloons situated under the glass surface. However, those aren’t real flying balloons – a coffee table like that is a disaster waiting to happen – but craftily made imitations. You could call them ‘legs’, but that would be insulting the maker. The balloons are made with such exacting details as to look real. One can sense the weightlessness inherent to balloons, as well as notice the typical inflated balloon sheen. Even the knots in the end look realistic. And the “strings” are the final part of the illusion, replacing legs convincingly enough to fool you into thinking that this table is indeed help aloft by a band of rogue balloons.
“The UP Balloon Table is a playful trompe l’oeil, giving the impression of a glass table top being suspended by red, gold and silver balloons.” – yes, you can have the balloons in other colors, but I find silver to be a little too distracting to be a effective illusion. Then again, it’s buyers choice, anyways – at with a price tag of 7,800 of Queen’s own pounds, it has to be a very special buyer. On the other hand, this is a special table. The website claims that each table is done by local artisans and craftspeople, and using only ethically sourced materials. And each one is made specifically for the person who ordered it.
Such is the harsh reality of the high-end balloon table market.
Duffy London has already done some other crazy tables that you can see here and here .
