30 Breathtaking Winning Photos From The GDT Nature Photographer Of The Year 2020 Contest
Now that the majority of us are stuck at home due to the quarantine, there’s nothing we’d like more than to go out into nature. And while trips to the forest or the beach will have to wait a little while, today we have something that will make that wait a little more bearable – the breathtaking winning photos from the Nature Photographer of the Year 2020 contest organized by the German Society for Nature Photography.
In an interview with Bored Panda, the organization said that due to the pandemic, voting wasn’t carried out during the annual general meeting – it was done online for the first time in GDT’s history. The participants competed in 7 different categories: Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Plants and Fungi, Landscapes, Nature’s Studio, and the special category — Water.
This year, 5,046 images were submitted to the competition and after a pre-jury procedure conducted by Alexandra Wünsch, Torsten Bittner and Jon A. Juarez, GDT members took turns voting, choosing ten images in each of the seven categories. The overall winner received an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III 12-40mm kit and the runner-ups got generous prizes by AC-Foto, a partner of GDT.

The overall winner of this year’s competition was Peter Lindel from Dortmund, Germany, with his photo of a European hare take in Northern Dortmund. “Compared to many international nature photography hotspots, this region has little to offer,” said the organizers. “[But] Peter Lindel [invested] a lot of time and blood, sweat, and tears working on this project on his doorstep. In these times, as everyone is urged to stay home, the generally classic subject of a hare gains special significance. It is also a beautiful statement for long-term exploration of a single species and region.”
