25 Things About How The Internet Started That OG’s Will Remember
Unlike the tech-savvy Gen Z, Millennials didn’t experience the era of Snapchat, personal smartphones, or 5G connectivity during their childhood. Instead, we navigated the world of chat rooms, shared a single family computer, and dealt with the agonizingly slow dial-up internet. Even though the early days of the internet now seem like ancient history, it’s essential to remember that the World Wide Web itself began in 1989 . Popular platforms like AOL and IRC (Internet Relay Chat) were the talk of the town in the late ’80s, making them more than 30 years old.
Reflecting on the early internet brings to light a plethora of interesting phenomena. Recently, a Redditor prompted a discussion among fellow internet veterans, asking, “What’s something ancient that only an Internet veteran would remember?” It’s a trip down memory lane for those who recall the quirks and novelties of the online world during its formative years.

Shanilou Perera
Shanilou has always loved reading and learning about the world we live in. While she enjoys fictional books and stories just as much, since childhood she was especially fascinated by encyclopaedias and strangely enough, self-help books. As a kid, she spent most of her time consuming as much knowledge as she could get her hands on and could always be found at the library. Now, she still enjoys finding out about all the amazing things that surround us in our day-to-day lives and is blessed to be able to write about them to share with the whole world as a profession.

Aušrys Uptas
One day, this guy just kind of figured - “I spend most of my time on the internet anyway, why not turn it into a profession?” - and he did! Now he not only gets to browse the latest cat videos and fresh memes every day but also shares them with people all over the world, making sure they stay up to date with everything that’s trending on the web. Some things that always pique his interest are old technologies, literature and all sorts of odd vintage goodness. So if you find something that’s too bizarre not to share, make sure to hit him up!
