20 Historical Portraits Reimagined With Baroque Drama By Artist Volker Hermes
Classical portraits are often associated with restraint and elegance, but artist Volker Hermes reimagines them with bold Baroque drama. By digitally altering historical paintings, he transforms familiar figures using elaborate costumes and concealed faces, shifting attention from identity to presence and symbolism.
In an interview with DeMilked, Hermes shared that his Hidden Portraits series began around 2007 and has remained central to his work ever since. More than a visual experiment, the series explores themes of individuality, self-image, equality, and diversity, while bridging the gap between historical art and modern values.
